Polyurea Coatings Are Developed Primarily For Industrial and Outdoor Applications, With Some Automotive Applications Also Featuring Polyurethanes

Polyurea Coatings

Polyurea Coatings are polyurethane foam rubber that serve as an alternative to synthetic rubber, particularly for military applications. Polyurea resists cracking, breaking and stretching, even under high stress and temperatures and have excellent chemical resistance. It is stronger and more flexible compared to epoxy. It is very durable and long-lasting and can last up to 10 years.

Polyurea Coatings are developed primarily for industrial and outdoor applications, with some automotive applications also featuring polyurethanes. The coatings are highly elastic and accommodate expansion, contraction and relative movement within concrete without cracking. The most common polyurea coatings applications are corrosion and abrasion protection of pipelines providing abrasion protection in mining and construction equipment. It is applied as a base coating to prevent cathodic disbanding and to improve pump output.

Polyurea products are typically applied to smooth and flat surfaces with the intent of forming a smooth, thick and rigid seal against any kind of weathering, wear, tear, or environmental exposures. Sealants added to polyurea provide numerous protection benefits. Polyurea coatings are extensively used on metals such as alloy, aluminum, and stainless steels in order to enhance both corrosion and tensile strength. Apart from these application areas, polyurea coatings are also used on wooden surfaces to protect them from weathering. Applying polyurea coatings over wooden surfaces is also beneficial in terms of protecting wooden structures from dents, dings, or scratches. The coatings provide a reliable waterproof lining to tanks, pipes, roofs, etc.

The market for Polyurea Coatings in the U.S is witnessing several M&A activities. In January 2021, PPG, a U.S.-based supplier of paints, coatings, and specialty materials, announced to acquire VersaFlex, a manufacturer specializing in polyurea, epoxy and polyurethane coatings for water and waste water infrastructure.
